Mushroom Education

General educational information only. Not medical advice.

“Functional mushrooms” is a common marketing term for non-psychoactive species such as lion’s mane, reishi, chaga, cordyceps, and turkey tail, often sold in supplements, teas, and foods. Research on many of them is still early, and dietary supplement claims are not evaluated by the FDA.

Psilocybin-containing mushrooms contain psilocybin, a psychoactive compound. Functional mushrooms, such as lion’s mane or reishi, do not. Always read a product’s label and ingredient list, and ask our Wizards if anything is unclear.

Common culinary mushrooms include white button, cremini, and portobello (all the same species at different stages), plus shiitake, oyster, maitake, and enoki.

Mycelium is the root-like network of thin threads, called hyphae, that a fungus grows through soil, wood, or another material. The mushroom we see is the fungus’s fruiting body. Mycelium is the main part of the organism.

Commercial growers typically introduce mushroom “spawn” into a nutrient-rich substrate, such as sawdust, straw, grain, or compost, then manage temperature, humidity, light, and fresh air until mushrooms fruit. Each species prefers different conditions.

Some wild mushrooms are toxic, and a few can be deadly, and many look like edible species. Never eat a foraged mushroom unless an expert has positively identified it. If you suspect mushroom poisoning, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 or 911.

Look for the full ingredient list, the mushroom species and the part used, serving information, allergen statements, warnings, and manufacturer contact details. Ask our Wizards if you can’t find something on a label.

Good starting points: Poison Help (1-800-222-1222, poisonhelp.hrsa.gov), the U.S. FDA for supplement and food safety, Michigan State University Extension, and the North American Mycological Association for identification resources.

Ingredients can include allergens or substances that interact with medications or health conditions. Read every label and warning, and talk with a healthcare provider before using a new product, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medication.
